Pahalgam Attack & India-Pakistan Crisis (April–May 2025):
What Happened?
India's Reaction
Within 24 hours, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan and closed the Wagah-Attari border. Pakistani citizens in India were asked to leave, and Indian visas for Pakistanis were revoked. Security forces launched a huge manhunt in Jammu and Kashmir, detaining over 2,800 people. A bounty of ₹20 lakh was placed on the attackers. Prime Minister Modi gave full operational freedom to the military and shut down half of the tourist spots in Kashmir.
On May 7,India launched Operation Sindoor - striking terror camps across Pakistan and PoK, killing dozens of militants. Diplomatic pressure increased, and security was tightened across Kashmir.
Pakistan's Stand
Pakistan officially denied any involvement. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif suggested it might be a false flag operation to justify cross-border attacks. Pakistan proposed a neutral investigation, which India rejected. Meanwhile, Pakistan reported civilian casualties from India’s strikes.
International Response
The U.S., UN, and other global powers urged restraint. The U.S. mediated a ceasefire agreement on May 10. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom condemned the religious targeting. Singapore’s MFA and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) also issued strong statements.

The episode also raised important questions about cross-border militancy, diplomatic accountability, and the role of international mediation in South Asia.
